Location: Jonestown is located on FM 1431 just 17 miles west of interstate 35. It is a thirty minute drive from the northwest city limits of Austin. Altitude ranges from 425 to 1000 feet. The inactive Balcones Escarpment extends through Austin, creating the dramatic hills and environmental features which characterize the area. From the 1930's to the early 1940's, a federal program largely financed a series of seven dams on the Colorado River creating the “Chain of Highland Lakes” consisting of seven lakes that stretch from the Austin city limits to a point 150 miles upstream. Lake Travis lies on Austin's western edge.
